Tattoo Aftercare Overview

The longevity and vibrancy of your art depend entirely on how you treat it during the healing process. A new tattoo is a fresh wound; proper care prevents infection and ensures the ink settles perfectly into your skin. Typically, the initial healing phase takes 2 to 4 weeks. Follow this guide to learn how to take care of your new tattoo!

Immediate Aftercare

Step 1: Unwrapping

Remove the bandage after 2-4 days by using warm water and slowly peeling it off. Once off, gently cleanse the area with antibacterial soap and pat dry with a  paper towel.

Note: If you notice redness around the outer edges of the bandage, take off the bandage and clean the area thoroughly. You can continue with the rest of the aftercare.

Step 2: Cleansing

Wash the tattoo gently several times a day using lukewarm water and unscented, antibacterial soap. Use your clean fingertips only—no washcloths or sponges. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Repeat this process until your tattoo is fully healed.

Step 3: Moisturize

Apply a very thin layer of unscented moisturizer once the tattoo has had a few days out of the saniderm to dry out. You can do this several times a day as long as it is in thin layers. What I recommend: Curel, Cetaphil. Cerave, Dove unscented and Jergens Unscented. What I don't recommend: Aquaphor,  Vaseline, A&D and scented lotions.

What To Avoid

As your tattoo starts to peel or itch, consistency is key. Keep the area clean and hydrated while protecting it from the elements.

Avoid These:

  • Scented Skincare: You'll want to stay away from scented soaps, lotions, etc. due to the possibility of it irritating the tattoo.
  • Sun Care: Keep the tattoo entirely out of the sun. Do not apply sunscreen until it is fully healed.
  • Water: Avoid swimming, hot tubs, baths, or soaking the tattoo in any way.
  • Hands Off: Never pick, scratch, or peel flaking skin; let it fall off naturally.

Long-Term Care & Touch-Ups

Sun protection is the key to longevity. Once fully healed, you can begin applying sunscreen to your tattoo when outdoors. Avoid direct tanning or harsh exfoliation.

I offer free touch-ups  for life. When requesting a touch-up, make sure to send a new request through my booking site. Touch-ups are completely normal, especially for  fine-line tattoos. When booking, schedule for at least two weeks after initially receiving the tattoo to let it heal first.
